Jonathan Polnay KC

Jonathan Polnay KC is recognised as an exceptional advocate at the very top of the profession, admired for his intellect, judgment and strategic skill. Appointed Senior Treasury Counsel in 2024, after serving as a junior since 2017, he is regularly instructed in the most serious, complex and high-profile cases for both prosecution and defence.

He has appeared in many of the defining criminal trials of recent years, including the prosecutions for the murder of Sir David Amess MP, the killing of PC Andrew Harper, the “black cab rapist” John Worboys, and the manslaughter of 39 Vietnamese migrants. His work also spans terrorism, organised crime, homicide, sexual offences and large-scale fraud. Renowned for his encyclopaedic legal knowledge and ability to present complex evidence with clarity and persuasion, he is trusted by juries, judges and clients alike.

Jonathan’s practice also extends to inquests, inquiries and public law. He has been instructed in some of the most security-sensitive and delicate proceedings, drawing on his extensive Treasury Counsel experience. He is currently Senior Counsel to the Independent Inquiry on Afghanistan and represents the CPS in the Covid Inquiry.
