Philippe Bhering is a seasoned intellectual property attorney with over 20 years of experience in the field. Based in our firm’s São Paulo office, he specializes in a broad spectrum of intellectual property law, including trademark, patent, copyright, design, unfair competition, software, trade secrets, and combating counterfeiting. Philippe provides comprehensive representation to high-profile multinational corporations across a diverse range of industries. His practice spans both strategic counseling and litigation, with expertise in civil and criminal spheres, acting before state and federal courts, as well as the Superior Court of Justice, in addition to handling administrative contentious procedures before the Brazilian Trademark and Patent Office (INPI).

As the head of the firm’s German Desk, Philippe plays a key role in advising clients on international IP matters, particularly those involving the European market. He holds both a Master’s and Ph.D. from a top institution in Germany, adding a strong academic foundation to his extensive practical experience.

Philippe is highly active in international intellectual property associations, including the International Trademark Association (INTA), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), MARQUES, ECTA, GRUR, and KINPA. He is deeply involved in committee work within these associations, including the Enforcement, Anti-Counterfeiting, and Amicus Curiae Committees.

Philippe also has an extensive background in academia, having spent years at the prestigious Max-Planck Institute for IP and Innovation in Munich. He is currently a Board Member of the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) and coordinates its International Law Committee.

Philippe frequently writes for respected legal publications and acts as a speaker and moderator at national and international IP conferences.

Career

Served as a Guest Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, in Munich, from October 2009 to March 2010, and again in 2016 and 2018;

Served as a Research Assistant at the International Max Planck Research School for Competition and Innovation, in Munich, from January 2010 to June 2010, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Reto Hilty;

Served as a foreign lawyer at the Munich office of the German law firm Boehmert & Boehmert, in 2010;

Elected member of the Trademark Law and Practice Team of the Association of European Trade Mark Owners – MARQUES (2010–2020);

Elected member for the 2010–2011 and 2012–2013 terms of the Enforcement Committee of the International Trademark Association – INTA;

Elected member for the 2014–2015, 2022–2023, and 2024–2025 terms of the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee of the International Trademark Association – INTA;

Elected member for the 2016–2017 and 2020–2021 terms of the International Amicus Committee of the International Trademark Association – INTA;

Elected member of the Board of Directors of the Associação Brasileira da Propriedade Intelectual – ABPI (2018–2019, 2020–2021, 2022–2023, and 2024–2025 terms);

Elected member of the Anti-Counterfeiting and Parallel Trade Team of the Association of European Trade Mark Owners – MARQUES (2022–2023 and 2024–2025);

Coordinator of the International Intellectual Property Law Committee of the Associação Brasileira da Propriedade Intelectual – ABPI (2022–2023 and 2024–2025 terms);
