Michael Carl joined SSEK in 2004 and has more than 20 years of experience practicing law in Southeast Asia. He was previously with Baker & McKenzie in its Singapore and Bangkok offices. Michael is praised for his "excellent technical grasp of both Indonesian law and the Indonesian language, which makes him unique amongst the expatriate lawyers in Jakarta" (IFLR1000).
Pojects include acting for Grab in the acquisition of Uber’s business and assets in Indonesia and assisting a global advisory firm with its investments in Grab and Tokopedia, the leading Indonesian e-commerce market platform. Michael advised a Middle Eastern reinsurance company on the acquisition of an Indonesian reinsurance company, and advised a Russian conglomerate on the establishment of a nickel smelter company and acquisition of a nickel mining company.
Received his JD from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) School of Law. Earned an SH (the equivalent of an LLB) in Indonesian law from Atma Jaya University, Jakarta, where he was first in his class. Received an MA in economics from the University of Hawaii. Michael is fluent in Indonesian.
