For the first fifteen years of practice, Matthew held a mixed practice between children and finance matters. Since 2019, he has specialised in public and private law children proceedings, with a particular emphasis on public law matters.

Matthew's children practice is weighted towards care proceedings of the utmost complexity. He is regularly instructed in cases involving allegations of:

-Murder (of parents and children).

-Serious non-accidental injury (including brain injury).

-Forced marriage.

-Human trafficking.

-Serious sexual abuse (including acting for children as alleged perpetrators).

He has particular experience of and interest in cases involving applications for FGMPOs and FMPOs.

His private law practice includes cases in which serious allegations of harm are alleged, and often involve allegations of parental alienation. He has a particular interest in surrogacy and modern families, having been junior counsel for the child in the landmark case of Re X (Surrogacy: Time Limits) [2014].
