Josephine Whitehead graduated in law from Warwick University in 1973 and completed the Law Society of England and Wales solicitors’ qualifying examinations in 1974. She joined Cameron & Shepherd in 1975 as a clerk, became articled in 1977 and was admitted to practice as a solicitor in 1979.
Ms. Whitehead became a salaried partner in 1982 before temporarily relocating to the United Kingdom in 1983, where she practiced in Cardiff, Wales, until returning to Guyana in 1986. After lecturing for two years at the University of Guyana and working with the firm of de Caires & Fitzpatrick for another two years, she re-joined Cameron & Shepherd as a partner in 1991.
She was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2018.
She is a founder member of the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic of which she is director/secretary and a founder member and past chairperson, vice-chairperson, director and secretary of Help & Shelter, a non-governmental organisation that works against domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.
In 1995, Ms. Whitehead was awarded the Golden Arrow of Achievement in that year’s national honours list for services in the fields of sports, law and women’s rights.
