Career
Nikhil Narayan Ramkarran graduated from the University of the West Indies with a law degree in 1998 and earned his Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad in September 2000. Admitted to the Guyana Bar that November, he joined Cameron & Shepherd — the country's oldest law firm, in continuous partnership since 1901 — as associate counsel, and has since made the firm's tradition of general civil and commercial litigation his own.
Elevated to partner in 2005, Mr. Ramkarran has been a driving force behind the firm's modernisation, shepherding its transition from typewriters to word processors and ultimately to a fully networked computer system. His current practice spans civil litigation, banking, and commercial law, and he is a registered trademark agent.
Beyond the courtroom, Mr. Ramkarran is a self-taught photographer of national standing. He was among the founding supporters of the Guyana Photographers group in 2010 and, in early 2012, co-mounted the "Coastal Wanderings" exhibition at the National Gallery of Art. He took the gold medal for photography at the Guyana Visual Arts Competition in both 2012 and 2016, contributed to the 2016 "Visions" exhibition, and has been recognised by Stabroek News as one of the "old masters" of contemporary Guyanese photography. His images have appeared in local magazines and international newspapers.
Mr. Ramkarran has served as Chairperson of the Board of the Guyana Stock Exchange since 2004, providing sustained stewardship to one of the country's principal financial institutions. He has also given his time to civic life, acting as honorary legal counsel to the Guyana Red Cross Society from 2009 to 2015 and contributing to the work of the NGO Eiripan prior to 2018.
