Career
Kamal Ramkarran was admitted to practice as an attorney-at-law in Guyana in October 2002 and joined Cameron & Shepherd on 1 November 2002 as an associate. He became a partner in January 2007.
He holds a Diploma in Public Management from the University of Guyana (1997), a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies (2000), a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School (2002), a Master of Laws degree in Commercial and Corporate Law from the University of London (2006), and a Master of Laws degree in Banking and Finance Law with Merit, also from the University of London (2018).
Mr. Ramkarran has served as a member of the National Archives Advisory Committee and, between 2006 and current (with a two-year break) as one of two nominees of the Minister of Health on the Medical Council of Guyana. After lengthy legal challenge preventing elections of the Guyana Cricket Board from being held, Mr. Ramkarran served as Cricket Ombudsman by appointment of the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture and conducted those elections, which successfully overcame legal challenge. He is one of three trustees of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Mutual Funds.
Over a dozen cases in which Mr. Ramkarran has appeared as counsel in the Guyana Court of Appeal and the Caribbean Court of Justice have been reported in the West Indian Law Reports and the Law Reports of the Commonwealth.
Mr. Ramkarran is the current president of the Bar Association of Guyana, a position he has held on several previous occasions. He represents the Bar Association as a member of the Constitution Reform Commission and on the Council of Legal Education.
