Career

Joaquim is Of Counsel of Competition and European Law at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo in Portugal.

With a professional background of over 20 years at the highest level, including being responsible for the national practice area of a leading European law firm, he has represented Portuguese and international clients from different sectors before the Portuguese Competition Authority (AdC), the European Commission, the Spanish CNMC, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the national Court of Competition, Regulation and Supervision (TCRS).

Having extensive experience in all areas of Competition Law, he stands out for his coordination of nearly all major merger control processes in Portugal over the last decade, representing clients in various international cartel cases before the European Commission and the AdC, as well as his involvement in other significant moments in the history of Competition Law in Portugal, such as the first case of abuse of dominant position by the AdC and the first Popular Competition Action judged before the TCRS.

He holds a law degree from the Lisbon University Law School. He was a trainee lawyer at the European Commission and also has a postgraduate degree in European Studies (with a focus on Community Litigation) from the European Institute of the Lisbon University Law School.

For the past 17 years, Joaquim has been ranked by main international law directories (such as Chambers Europe, Global Competition Review, Who's Who Legal - including here as a “thought leader” - and The Legal 500) as a leading lawyer in his practice area.

He was part of the winning team twice, in a previous firm, of the most prestigious international award in his field of practice, the Regional Firm of the Year - Europe, awarded by Global Competition Review (GCR Awards), in 2014 and 2018.

Joaquim Caimoto Duarte is a founding member of the Círculo dos Advogados Portugueses de Direito da Concorrência, of which he has already been Vice-President of the Board, having also acted several times as Non-Governmental Advisor to the International Competition Network.
