Practice Areas
With over 17 years’ experience advising on commercially and politically sensitive disputes, Joana is skilled at developing investigative strategies and gathering evidence in support of complex international litigation, arbitration, and high-value asset recovery.
Joana is a native Portuguese speaker and fluent in English, French, Spanish and German. At Raedas, she leads the Latin America practice.
Joana is a recognized expert in asset tracing and recovery and leads the Sovereign Disputes practice at Raedas, alongside Senior Director, Isabel Asquith. Joana is one of the most experienced and reputable practitioners advising on matters of this nature. She and her team have helped attach a wide range of assets and secured several settlements on behalf of clients. In this context, Joana advises on potential enforcement targets and pressure points to develop efficient recoverability strategies, including gathering evidence on complex commercial transactions involving sovereigns and state-owned companies, alter-ego arguments and evidence of the commercial purpose of assets.
Joana works closely with Claimants, their legal counsel, PR, third-party funders and other disputes specialists. Her work more generally focuses on the support of legal processes including discovery/disclosure and other interim relief; fraud and corruption investigations; sanctions-related actions; and other special situations. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of these disputes, Joana’s work is often channelled into PR and government relations campaigns.
Joana has given evidence and regularly provides declarations and expert reports in support of her and the team’s findings. Some of these reports have also been submitted to domestic prosecutors’ offices as part of criminal claims, both for defense and prosecution.
