James is a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in the legal domain, specialising in capital markets and M&A with a particular focus on the life sciences and education sectors. His breadth of experience encompasses equity and hybrid capital raisings, venture capital investments, and a variety of corporate finance transactions, including both private and public M&A deals.

In his advisory role, James serves as a strategic consultant to boards of public and private companies, independent directors, and government bodies. He is known for his commercial and practical approach when dealing with complex corporate matters, leveraging his substantial experience, including his significant in-house role as General Counsel of Minara Resources (formerly Anaconda Nickel).

James leads MinterEllison's national life sciences practice and is a prominent figure in venture capital law for life sciences in Australia.

His contribution to the field was recognised when he was awarded as the key advisor to Brandon Capital for the Venture Capital Investment Deal of the Year Award in 2022 by the Australian Investment Council. His expertise extends to medical research and commercialisation, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biosciences, health, and aged care industries.

A proponent of innovation within the life sciences sector, James offers a wide range of services, including structuring, regulatory (including TGA), fundraising, governance, and due diligence advice to various organisations, from medtech/health tech start-ups to well-established domestic and international private entities, as well as ASX and NASDAQ listed companies.

Outside of his professional practice, James contributes to the community as an advisory board member of Her Heart Limited, a not-for-profit dedicated to raising awareness of heart disease in women. He also holds leadership roles within his firm, chairing the partnership selection committee and co-leading the ECM practice.
