François Baril

Practice Areas

François Baril is a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. His practice focuses on litigation with an emphasis on health law, including acting as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association. He regularly advises on issues of professional liability and discipline and regulatory issues.

François also advises foreign and Canadian clients on aspects of competition law, including merger clearance, distribution issues, pricing issues, investigations and enforcement actions.

François has appeared before the SCC, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Tax Court of Canada, all levels of Ontario Courts as well as a number of federal and provincial administrative tribunals.

François teaches competition law and lectures on trial advocacy at the University of Ottawa.

He has also been recognized in The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory and Benchmark Canada. François received the Best Lawyers® 2022 Medical Negligence “Lawyer of the Year” award in Ottawa.

In 2019, the Association des jursistes d’expression francaise de l’Ontario awarded him the Order of Merit for his contributions to improving access to justice for Ontario francophones.
