Alex counsels energy clients on trading in derivatives, enforcement matters, and compliance with derivatives-related regulatory requirements, including those imposed by the CFTC. He provides interpretation and guidance on rules promulgated by various federal agencies, the National Futures Association, and a number of derivatives exchanges. Alex provides clients strategic advice on navigating the regulatory and legislative environment in Washington DC and also advocates on behalf of his clients on regulatory matters before the CFTC and other state and federal agencies and on legislative matters before the U.S. Congress.

In addition, Alex frequently assists clients, including swap dealers, commodity trading advisors, commodity pool operators, introducing brokers, and with CFTC and NFA registration and creating and improving compliance programs. Alex has also helped clients launch commodity trading platforms for crude oil and renewable energy and carbon credits. He also advises energy firms, commercial end users, investment banks and pooled investment vehicles on an array of derivatives and other transactions, including the trading of carbon allowances and other ESG attributes.

Using his experience with analogous derivatives regulatory matters in the United States, Alex advises on derivatives regulatory developments in Canada (federal and provincial), including issues related to reporting, margin, and exemptions from dealer registration.
