Practice Areas

Sam Williams is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution team in Jersey.

He is an experienced litigator and advocate, having been called to the Jersey Bar in 2015, and appears regularly in the Royal Court of Jersey and Court of Appeal. Sam has particular expertise in private wealth disputes, including breach of trust proceedings, fiduciary removal applications, contentious restructurings, construction and tax mistake applications. He advises trustees, beneficiaries and settlors.

In addition, Sam has experience of enforcing foreign arbitral awards and judgments and obtaining urgent injunctive relief, often in the context of fraud and asset tracing. He also advises on corporate and shareholder disputes, as well as on insolvency matters.

Appearing for the successful respondent beneficiaries in the Court of Appeal in G v SG Kleinwort Hambros [2023] JCA 088, a leading authority on trustee directions applications and the scope of “non-binding guidance”

Appearing at trial on behalf of beneficiaries seeking the removal of a protector in B v Ward 2022 (1) JLR 170

Obtaining relief to set aside transfers of assets to a foundation on the basis of tax mistake in Re B and C [2023] JRC 166

Appearing on behalf of the trustee in the leading Jersey case on charitable trusts and the rules against perpetuities, Re Mattas [2024] JRC 068, and obtaining Beddoe relief for the purpose of a challenge to a foreign tax liability

Appearing at trial on behalf of a trustee in the Crociani v Crociani breach of trust proceedings, as well as obtaining a worldwide freezing order in respect of a claim for contribution based on dishonest assistance
