Personal
Michael has dedicated his time outside of his career to supporting the legal profession. He served on the National Executive of the Canadian Bar Association’s Health Law Section, including as Chair from 2014 to 2016, and acted as Conference Chair for the CBA National Health Law Conferences in 2015 and 2017, having also spoken and moderated at various CBA National Health Law Conferences from 2009 to 2019.
At the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, Michael was an Adjunct Professor of Health Law from 2006 to 2018 and a member of the Faculty’s Mooting and Debating Committee from 1999 to 2018. He played a key role in the creation of the Bennett Jones Health Law Moot, supporting the development of emerging legal talent since 2011.
In the broader community, Michael served on the Board of Hospice Calgary from 2018 to 2025, including as Chair from 2020 to 2024.
Experience
Michael is Carbert Waite's Chairperson and the Co-Chair of the firm's Health Law Group. He has over 25 years of experience representing healthcare institutions, nurses, physicians, and other health professionals on a wide range of complex issues in Alberta. He is recognized as one of the leading Healthcare Lawyers in Canada.
Michael primarily focuses on Health Law, but his practice is enriched by his substantial expertise in employment law, personal injury, and estate and commercial litigation.
Additionally, as a trained mediator through the Straus Institute at Pepperdine University, he conducts mediations across a wide range of matters, bringing a balanced, practical, and skilled approach to dispute resolution.
