Practice Areas
Mark has over 20 years of arbitration experience.
Mark acts as lead counsel in international commercial arbitrations, gas pricing disputes and investment treaty claims. He has experience of conducting arbitrations under a wide range of rules including those of the ICC, LCIA, ICSID, SCC and SIAC, as well as the UNCITRAL Rules.
Mark has experience across a number of jurisdictions and sectors, including telecoms, construction and infrastructure, and heavy industry but he is particularly recognised in the market for his expertise in energy and natural resources disputes. He regularly acts for many of the world's major energy companies, and is an authority on pricing disputes. Indeed, he edited Gas Price Arbitrations: A Practical Handbook, which was the market's first book on the subject (published in 2014) including upstream and downstream disputes, as well as LNG price reviews. In recognition of his outstanding skills as an advocate, Mark was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2019.
Routinely appearing as lead advocate in his cases, Mark has argued numerous cases before the world's leading arbitrators. He is particularly noted for his skills as a cross-examiner, in which context he has extensive experience cross-examining experts in the finance and energy sectors, including upstream and downstream disputes, as well as LNG price reviews.
His clients include energy majors, resources and infrastructure companies, telecoms operators and sovereign States (including the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Cuba, among others).
