Work Highlights

Jonathan recently acted for an owner of a ship which was refused clearance by the authorities after loading a cargo of bagged rice which it transpired was loaded in contravention of an export ban, and some of which had been misdeclared, leading to almost 3 months delay in departure. Mates receipts had to be reissued and bills of lading were eventually signed after a further two months. In the meantime the sub-time charterers – also the traders - had run into financial difficulties. Jonathan’s experience of the rice trade and understanding of the commercial and contractual factors in play assisted in managing the shippers, traders and receivers during the prolonged voyage and addressing any disputes as they arose and avoiding nearly all eventual claims.
