Joel Smith

Joel is a partner in our London IP group. He is an expert in complex IP litigation and also commercial IP arrangements, with nearly 30 years of experience, including heavyweight trial, deal and counselling roles.

Joel thrives in bringing his thoughtful and strategic approach to IP disputes, whether to resolve through trial or to find other innovative solutions through negotiation or mediation. He also excels in leading negotiations over critical IP and technology issues in M&A transactions, projects and licensing deals.

Joel has deep industry knowledge and commercial insights, able to cut quickly to the heart of issues and deliver upon our clients’ commercial objectives. He is a specialist in the FMCG and TMT sectors.

He also well versed in advertising and allied regulatory issues that interface with IP arrangements. He has unique experience in agribusiness and plant biotech.

Before joining Simmons & Simmons, Joel was a partner with two other major global firms, based in London, with secondments to Milan, Hong Kong and Sydney.
