Practice: Joaõ Humberto’s interest in Law came along with the social need—and, personally, with his desire—to correct injustices. With a strong presence in social causes, he continues to follow the principles of the social function of the practice of law and the ethical exercise of the profession, which has motivated him throughout his career.
Career: Before founding Martorelli Advogados, João was a member of the Council of Tax Appeals of the Municipality of Recife (1981) and the legal attorney of the Municipality of Recife (1981/2001), also working as a State Tax Attorney (having achieved both positions via public service entrance exam).
Education: He holds an LLB (1977) from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).
Academic credentials, speaking engagements, etc: He was the Secretary of Legal Affairs of the City Hall of Recife from 1986 to 1988, and a Federal Counselor of the Brazilian Bar Association, Pernambuco Section (OAB/PE), in the triennial 1998/2000. Moreover, he is a Former Councilor and Former President of “Causa Comum”; a Member of the Board of Directors of CESA - Centre for Studies of Law Firms (until 2005), headquartered in São Paulo; Vice-President of the CESA/PE Regional Office; and Chairperson of the Legislation Committee of AMCHAM (2003). He has published several articles in a fortnightly column in “Jornal do Commercio” (a newspaper) and a book, "O Cofre é o Coração", with some of its articles.
