Career
Jason Tompkins serves as Chair of Balch’s Issues & Appeals Practice and has extensive experience handling litigation and appeals in federal and state courts, including serving as counsel in the United States Supreme Court. His litigation and appellate experience spans nearly every category, including energy, environmental, administrative law, business torts, and consumer finance. Jason regularly handles challenges to administrative agency actions at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and leads appeals to the federal courts from those actions.
Jason also focuses a significant portion of his practice on class action defense, particularly in the area of consumer finance litigation. Jason has been lead counsel on more than 80 class actions and hundreds of individual cases involving claims under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). He acts as regional and national counsel for several financial services clients who trust him to coordinate defense strategy across numerous jurisdictions—both at the trial and appellate levels. Jason also guides clients faced with investigations by regulators or attorneys general regarding consumer issues, as well as providing compliance advice under the state and federal consumer finance laws.
