Career

As Co-President of McDonald Hopkins, Jim Stief balances firm-wide leadership with an active and sophisticated commercial finance practice. He plays a defining role in shaping the firm’s strategic direction, guiding growth initiatives, and serving on both the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. His leadership is informed by his prior role as Chair of the Business Department, giving him a deep understanding of the firm’s operations and client-focused culture.

In addition to his leadership responsibilities, Jim is a trusted advisor to commercial banks, private credit lenders, and middle-market companies. He regularly counsels clients on complex financing transactions and strategic business matters, bringing a practical, business-minded approach to high-stakes decisions.

Jim’s perspective is further strengthened by his background as a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) and his early career at Arthur Andersen, which provide a strong foundation of financial and analytical insight. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from Notre Dame Law School and his B.S., cum laude, from John Carroll University.
