Career
Hugo is a partner and head of the Intellectual Property practice at PLMJ, with more than 20 years' professional experience. He is widely recognised for his expertise in IP litigation, with particular strength in patent, trademark and copyright disputes. Hugo has handled numerous complex court proceedings and arbitrations involving industrial property rights, including high-stakes patent cases and trademark and copyright infringement matters.
Beyond contentious work, Hugo has extensive experience negotiating, drafting and advising on a broad range of IP-related agreements, including licensing arrangements, technology transfer contracts, software licensing deals, R&D collaborations and IP assignment agreements. His transactional practice complements his litigation expertise, enabling him to provide clients with strategic counsel across the full lifecycle of their intellectual property assets.
Hugo's practice also encompasses advertising law and image rights, allowing him to offer integrated advice on matters at the intersection of IP.
He is qualified as a Portuguese Patent and Trademark Attorney since 2012 and as a European Trademark and Design Attorney since 2016. Hugo holds a master's degree in private legal sciences from the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto, and completed a postgraduate course in arbitration at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Hugo is a frequent speaker at universities and at Portuguese and international congresses and seminars. Before joining PLMJ, he was a lawyer at Baptista, Monteverde & Associados and CMS.
