Gary Lidington specialises in the full range of commercial disputes, including related professional negligence claims, both in the English Courts and in arbitration (under all major institutional rules and bespoke). His commercial work includes sale and supply of goods and services, banking and financial services, partnership, agency and insurance matters. Much of the work he undertakes has a strong fraud or multi-jurisdictional element. He is also experienced in the full range of company and shareholder disputes. He has considerable experience in oil and gas disputes, which form a significant part of his practice. He is renowned for his practical, commercially minded and client focused approach, and has a reputation for taking over and turning around distressed cases.

Notable cases include: Offside v Kidman Asset Management Ltd (a €20M claim arising out of a fraudulent ponzi investment scheme, targeting members of the Italian football community), Courtwood Holdings v Woodley Properties Limited (£30M civil fraud claim), BP Oil International v Bankers Petroleum Albania Limited ($54M breach of an oil supply contract claim); a $440M UNCITRAL investor/state arbitration in the oil industry; Tullow Oil Limited v Heritage Oil & Gas Limited ($303M indemnity claim); Bank of Scotland v Pereira & Pain (the leading authority on setting aside judgment/appealing when a party fails to turn up to trial).
