Matthew is a commercial-chancery barrister with a particular emphasis on charities, private client, and property.
Matthew is one of just eight junior barristers who are ranked for charity law in both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500. Matthew regularly advises charities across the country, from international organisations to local trusts and start-ups, on issues relating to governance, fundraising and mergers. His recent court work has covered disputed elections, landlord and tenant disputes, insolvency proceedings, and inheritance disputes. Matthew has twice been invited to speak at the Charity Law Association annual conference.
For his private client work, Matthew was nominated for ‘Star Junior’ at the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth awards 2024. Recently, Matthew has successfully represented clients in several reported High Court cases. Out of court, Matthew has advised Jersey trustees, Swiss trustees, and individuals in England, Canada and New Zealand on complex trust and estates matters.
Alongside full-time practice, Matthew teaches Land Law at Oxford University. Matthew’s expertise covers both land law and landlord and tenant law. His recent work has involved disputes relating to landed estates, listed buildings, and substantial farms. In 2023, he successfully represented a client in a reported appeal on the interpretation of conveyances.
