Ms. Chamindi Ekanayake specializes in intellectual property law and has extensive knowledge of the legal framework relating to the same. As such, she has been a key individual in building the intellectual property law practice of the Firm, since she joined in the year 2008.
As Manager of the Firm’s Intellectual Property Division, Ms. Ekanayake’s experience extends from advising both local and foreign clients on local and cross-border intellectual property-related transactions to portfolio management and monetization of such rights. She also regularly defends clients at opposition hearings held at the National Intellectual Property Office.
In testament to her knowledge of the intellectual property landscape of the country, she has presented academic papers at both national and international conferences on intellectual property law and information technology law. She is also a prolific author on various aspects of intellectual property law and has published numerous articles showcasing her understanding of the subject.
Ms. Ekanayake is also a trained practitioner in patent drafting, and she has provided legal consultancy to several Sri Lankan universities on patent prosecution. Her consultancy services extend to the Ministry of Plantation Industries for the identification and establishment of several Geographical Indications in Sri Lanka. Moreover, she has served as a consultant for the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), promoting Intellectual Property awareness among Sri Lankan business entities.
Ms. Ekanayake was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2008. She holds an LL.B (Hons), LL.M and MBA (Finance) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Currently she is pursuing an M. Phil at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo.
