Prior to working in the Middle East, Alan worked at Linklaters in London undertaking major institutional commercial property development and funding work. Alan has spoken at INSOL and at the IBA Conferences.
Alan is admitted as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.

Alan is a Partner in the Banking & Finance team at Hadef & Partners. He has extensive experience in advising clients on legal aspects in banking, Islamic finance, project finance, UAE debt capital markets, private public initiatives and privatisation. His clients include developers, sponsors, banks, government institutions and private entities.
Over the past 25 years, Alan has practised throughout the Middle East including in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman and Cairo. He has been involved in one way or another since 1998, in all of the UAE’s water and power and sewage infrastructure projects. Alan and his team have been involved in the UAE’s groundbreaking PPPs, infrastructure funds and conventional and Islamic debt restructurings.
Work Highlights
1. Alan worked on and led the Hadef & Partner’s teams in the majority of the UAE’s IWPP’s over the past 20 years.
2. He advised lenders on a murabaha financing for a large Dubai real estate development which involved musataha mortgage security.
3. He advised the sponsors to the bond and debt refinancing and security restructuring of the S2 IWPP in Abu Dhabi.
4. He advised the sponsors on the first Hassyan IPP which did not ultimately proceed.
5. He advised the project sponsors in the Hassyan coal fired IPP on the project documents and the bid.
6. He has experience of ADWEA, DEWA, FEWA, and SEWA power projects.
7. He advised Abengoa in the solar power desalination prototype project with Masdar in Abu Dhabi.
8. He advised Befesa Aluminio in a joint venture with Emirates Global Aluminium for an SPL and dross waste project.
9. He advised the sponsors in the Fujairah Oil Terminal project financing.
10. He advised commercial lenders ECA and bonds underwriters on a US$6 billion finance deal for the EMAL aluminium smelter project in Abu Dhabi which involved musataha mortgages and a wide variety of security.
11. He advises the sponsors on the US$3 billion Taweelah B IWPP on a regular basis as Company Secretary which comprises significant shared facilities.
12. He advised the lenders in the US$2.1 billion Umm Al Nar IWPP restructuring which was a mixed conventional and Islamic financing.
13. Acted for the lenders in relation to the Zayed University PPP and the Sorbonne University PPP in Abu Dhabi.
14. Acted for Total Abengoa sponsors on Shames 1 Solar Power Project
15. Advised the lenders on the US$2.1 billion Umm Al Nar IWPP which was a mixed conventional and Islamic financing.
16. Advised the sponsors on the US$2.26 billion Fujairah 2 greenfield IWPP.
17. Advised the sponsors on the US$1.5 billion Fujairah 1brownfield IWPP.
