Main Areas of Practice:

Construction:

Smith Currie lawyers represent clients in litigation and other forms of dispute resolution, but also consult with, advise, and assist clients on project development throughout the life of a project in an effort to avoid, mitigate, and (if necessary) prevail in claims and disputes. The firm has broad experience assisting clients at every stage and with every facet of a project, including: contract drafting and negotiation; labor and human resources issues; safety and health matters; insurance and bonding; contract administration; claims avoidance; and claims preparation, prosecution, and defense. Both domestically and internationally, the firm advises on a wide array of public and private projects, such as energy, infrastructure, industrial, water and wastewater, commercial, healthcare, hospitality, gaming, hotels, condominiums, sports venues, mega-projects of various types, P-3 projects, schools and universities, and public works projects (federal, state, and local).

Government Contracts:

Smith Currie has decades of experience navigating the complex and ever-changing regulations governing federal contracting. Smith Currie is equally comfortable assisting clients just entering the federal market and advising experienced federal contractors. The firm’s lawyers regularly handle complex matters, including matters involving bid protests, ethics compliance, cost and pricing data, fraud and false claims, Buy American Act, Davis-Bacon Act, Miller Act bonds, subcontracting and small business teaming arrangements. The firm has extensive experience handling disputes before the various boards and courts and defending clients against government investigations and claims. The firm’s lawyers have worked on a wide range of federal projects including highways, bridges, airports, dams and levees, embassies, office buildings, courthouses, hospitals, and military facilities of all types.

Environmental:

Smith Currie’s services range from assistance during the pre-acquisition phase of property transactions to the prosecution or defense of environmental indemnification or cost recovery actions, to structuring effective responses to Superfund and other environmental enforcement actions. The firm regularly provides advice and assistance on environmental matters to public and private owners, manufacturers, transporters, and other consulting, construction and industrial concerns. The firm’s clients include companies that are actively involved in performing environmental remediation work and environmental consulting, such as working on Superfund clean-ups and hazardous materials abatement projects.

Commercial Litigation:

Smith Currie regularly represents clients in disputes involving real property, commercial landlord-tenant law, and various commercial contracts, as well as disputes concerning joint venture agreements, and defense of personal injury, wrongful death, and design and construction defect actions arising out of construction projects.

International Work:

The firm regularly represents clients on projects in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and the Middle East. The firm has served as counsel in multiple arbitrations before various international arbitration tribunals. The firm is also called upon frequently to advise on construction-related matters globally.
