Firm Overview:
McGuireWoods, one of the world’s leading law firms, has earned the loyalty of its many longstanding clients with deep and broad legal experience; a passion for understanding their businesses and markets; innovative delivery of practical, business-minded solutions; and unmatched service. McGuireWoods’ continuing success comes down to one simple fact: The firm listens to its clients.

Clients consistently place McGuireWoods among a select group in surveys such as BTI Consulting’s 'Client Service A-Team', an annual ranking derived from unprompted feedback by general counsel and top decision-makers at Fortune 1,000 companies. McGuireWoods has been singled out over ten times for excellence on BTI’s 'Client Service 30' list. In addition, BTI named McGuireWoods to its 'Most Recommended Law Firms' list for more than 15 consecutive years — a rare and prestigious distinction based on input from corporate counsel willing to bet their reputations when recommending specific firms to their peers.

Main Areas of Practice:

Fintech:
McGuireWoods’ national fintech team serves emerging financial companies in the areas of consumer and commercial litigation, regulatory compliance, capital markets, and data privacy and security, among others. With decades of experience representing financial institutions, the firm has deep industry insight and broad capabilities to help fintech companies thrive.

The team specialises in consumer-facing fintech product and compliance issues, including marketplace lending, payroll, equity sharing and other financial products. As compliance, regulatory and outside product counsel, McGuireWoods’ fintech team advises clients on a broad array of issues, in addition to handling numerous federal and state government investigations and inquiries. The firm’s litigation team represents fintech companies — as well as the nation’s largest banks and traditional financial institutions — in individual and class consumer litigation around the country.

McGuireWoods helps bank clients leverage fintech partnerships and advises financial institutions in the formation of organizations such as fintech incubators and global research universities. In addition, the firm represents a fintech company that is among the first to apply for a special purpose fintech bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).

Consumer Compliance & Litigation:
McGuireWoods counsels fintech companies on consumer compliance and handles consumer litigation and class actions around the country involving state UDAP and consumer protection statutes as well as federal claims under the TCPA, TILA, FDCPA, ECOA and FCRA. The firm’s lawyers draw upon decades of experience representing financial institutions.

Government Investigations & Regulation:
McGuireWoods understands the nuances of fintech companies and advises clients on responding to inquiries from the DOJ, CFPB, OCC, FinCEN, SEC and state attorneys general. The firm provides guidance on compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act, Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, and Office of Foreign Assets Control regulations.

Lending:
McGuireWoods represents clients in complex, high-value financings, and helps financial lending clients handle middle-market, mission-critical transactions.
