THE CHAMBERS Five Paper specialises in commercial, property, employment, family law, business immigration and regulatory law. Chambers works with clients from many sectors and believes accessibility, communication and strong relationships are key to delivering excellent results. Senior members are among the most experienced and innovative within their areas of expertise and the chambers’ juniors deal with practical legal matters on a daily basis. This range of experience enables Five Paper to provide clients with a service that is both expert and cost-effective.

WORK UNDERTAKEN Five Paper has five thriving practice teams:

Commercial: The commercial team works with clients involved in commercial finance, insolvency and asset recovery. The team specialises in factoring and invoice discounting, corporate insolvency, trade finance and the sale of goods, credit and securities, breach of directors’ and fiduciary duties, personal bankruptcy, civil fraud and tracing and enforcement against land.

Property: The property team specialises in acting for local authorities, registered providers of social housing, and private landlords and tenants in the areas of housing, residential landlord and tenant law and public law, as well as property-related discrimination law. The team is also experienced in all property-related fields, including real property/general chancery work, commercial landlord and tenant law, and probate.

Employment: The employment team provides a full-service for all types of employment matters. The team also has specialists in regulatory matters, such as health and safety at work, with barristers on the List of Specialist Regulatory Advocates in health and safety and environmental law who are certified for this type of work and also business immigration.

Family, Inheritance and Trusts: The family team specialises in all types of financial order cases, Schedule 1 cases, Children Act cases, financial provision and matrimonial jurisdiction law. The team has recently expanded its areas of expertise and members are now regularly instructed in matrimonial finance and children cases which touch upon issues of bankruptcy, housing and inheritance. Members are regularly instructed on matters involving the Inheritance Act, as well as wills and probate.

Business Immigration & Regulatory Team (‘BIRT’): BIRT works closely with business, industry and regulators. Members of BIRT are specialist practitioners in business immigration including sponsor licensing, compliance, PBS & Tiers 1-2 & 4-5, EU issues, Brexit and the right to work. Members also have experience in statutory appeals including appeals under section 24 HSWA, inquests and inquiries, disputes regarding the Office of Rail and Road including road transport issues, and care homes and health regulation.

PUBLICATIONS Five Paper’s senior members edit some of the leading specialist law publications. These include: Gutteridge and Megrah’s ‘Law of Bankers’ Commercial Credits’, 8th edition by Richard King; Sir Roy Goode’s ‘Proprietary Rights and Insolvency in Sales Transactions’, 3rd edition by Simon Mills; ‘Salinger on Factoring’, 6th edition by Simon Mills and others; and Atkin’s Court Forms Vol. 35 ‘Sale and Supply of Goods and Services’ by Simon Mills and others. 

RECRUITMENT Pupils spend time with different practice teams to experience a wide variety of work. Pupils receive an award of £25,000 each plus guaranteed earnings in the second six of £10,000.
