Firm Overview:
Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP (Filion) is one of Canada’s largest and highest-ranked law firms practicing exclusively management-side labour and employment law. Filion acts for both federally and provincially regulated employers in the private, public, and broader public sectors.

The firm was founded in 1982 by Roy Filion QC, David Wakely, and Warren Winkler QC, who went on to be appointed Chief Justice of the Province of Ontario. Now with 47 lawyers, the firm has three offices in Ontario and is part of AEC, a Canadian network of L&E specialty firms, as well as L&E GLOBAL, an international alliance of employers’ counsel. Filion is ranked as one of Canada’s Top 10 Labour & Employment Boutiques (Canadian Lawyer, 2018-2019).

Main Areas of Practice:
Filion’s practice is devoted exclusively to management-side labour and employment law. The firm’s lawyers represent and advise Canadian in-house counsel, executives, managers, and human resources professionals on all aspects of the law governing the employer-employee relationship. They also advise international clients establishing a Canadian presence and those with existing operations on local labour and employment law matters and customs.

The practice includes advising on employers’ rights and obligations in relation to labour relations, employment standards, occupational health and safety, human rights, workers’ compensation, pensions, benefits, pay equity, and the common law.

For employers involved in labour negotiations, the firm participates at the bargaining table or behind the scenes as an advisor. The firm’s lawyers also regularly litigate cases before the courts and numerous administrative tribunals. As well, the firm advises employers in developing and maintaining sound labour relations and employment policies.

Filion’s clients operate in diverse sectors of the economy, including retail, energy, manufacturing, healthcare, education, hospitality, transportation, and government. Many have national or international operations.
