White Collar Criminal Defense & Government Investigations

Angeli & Calfo is the premier white collar criminal defense firm in the Northwest, led by five Chambers-ranked lawyers. A small representative sample of our experience includes the following matters:

• Former Senior Enron executive in criinal and civil litigation alleging securities fraud. After a three-month federal criminal trial in U.S. District Court in Houston, client was not convicted on any criminal charge
• Representation of W.R. Grace and its plant manager in environmental criminal prosecution in U.S. District Court in Missoula, Montana, alleging obstruction of justice and knowing endangerment under the Clean Air Act. At trial, the company and all individuals were acquitted
• Representation of bp executives in securities and environmental investigations arising out of the Deepwater Horizon fire and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
• David Copperfield in multi-year federal grand jury investigation and related civil proceedings; following our defense investigation, the government dropped all potential charges and the civil matter was dismissed voluntarily

Employment Litigation

The firm's employment practice is limited to high-stakes employment matters, often involving high-ranking corporate executives and managers. Many of our employment matters arise out of FCA investigations or other whistleblower activity. The following is a small sample of the types of employment matters we handle:

• Representation of Motorola executive in lawsuit alleging alleged theft of trade secrets and violation of anti-competition and anti-soliciation covenants
• Representation of King County, Washington in age, race, and disability discrimination suit brought by former employee in wastewater treatment division. After four-week trial, obtained complete defense verdict
• Representation of Cell Therepeutics, Inc. in retaliatory termination claim arising out of FCA investigation. Obtained summary judgment ruling in client's favor, which was affirmed on appeal in Marin v. King County, 194 Wn.App. 795, 378 P.2d 203 (2016)
• Representation of GE Healthcare subsidiary in retaliatory discharge claim under the FCA. Obtained summary judgment in client's favor after investigation into plaintiff's spoliation of evidence. The case resulted in a seminal Ninth Circuit decision on spoliation, Leon v. IDX Systems Corp., Inc., 464 F.3d 951 (9th Cir. 2006)
