Burges Salmon's private wealth receives plaudits for its ability to cover the full range of private client work, including landed estates work, trust restructuring, probate and complex tax disclosure matters. Fellow lawyers acknowledge the firm's "top-tier" status.

They "have the biggest team in Bristol and they certainly do offer international advice and domestic advice and do it very well," says a peer. Another interviewee says they "want people to understand advice; they are user-friendly, and deal with things quickly and without flapping."

Notable practitioners

Jim Aveline
is "client-focused and technically very able," according to a barrister. Aveline primarily advises on family business issues, and an adviser says he is "very good at dealing with people of different generations," so has "very strong communication skills." A fellow solicitor says: "He is great with clients, he has a personal chemistry with them."

Kevin Kennedy
is an experienced trust and probate disputes specialist, with a specialism in private client and agricultural matters. Kennedy is a "leader in the field in Bristol and nationally," says an interviewee. A barrister says that he is all about "cutting through to the chase; there is no waffle with Kevin Kennedy, the advice is clear and concise," adding that he has "good client care, but always firm advice."

Co-head of the firm's HNW/UHNW individuals team,
Suzanna Harvey
is "very talented," according to commentators, who note that "she is predominantly an international lawyer so does a lot of international planning," with a particular focus on tax and immigration topics. One source says she "absolutely understands the client service provider role," adding that she "makes a point of being available if you have any questions," and adopts an approach of "it is not your problem, it is our problem."

Tom Hewitt
draws on his prior experience as a chartered surveyor and land agent to advise on tax issues for those with substantial land assets. Peers say he demonstrates a "very good understanding of rural businesses." Another source says he is "a technical lawyer" who "knows this sector very well."
