Career
William is one of Jersey’s most highly rated litigators. He specialises in trust and commercial disputes. An English barrister and a Jersey Advocate, he has almost three decades’ experience of acting in very complex and high value cases. He acts for clients from all over the world: individuals, corporations and government agencies.
He is rated in band 1 for Offshore Dispute Resolution in Jersey by Chambers & Partners.
Much of his work involves asset tracing and/or fraud. He has substantial expertise in obtaining creative and effective freezing and disclosure orders in support of both Jersey and overseas litigation. He has also prosecuted and defended in major criminal cases, involving fraud and money laundering.
He was educated at a comprehensive school in England before obtaining a First Class degree in Modern History at Oxford University, then achieving Distinction in the Diploma in Law at City University London and Outstanding at the Inns of Court School of Law. While his strong academic background ensures he brings intellectual rigour to his work, he is a firm believer in plain-speaking advice and advocacy, and a practical, results-focused approach to litigation.
Work Highlights
HIL v Crill and Sanne – acted successfully for local lawyer accused of conspiracy against former partners. The plaintiffs dropped their case mid-trial after opening speeches and cross-examination of their first witness.
Pender v Guardian and PSG – acting for English company in unfair prejudice claim, involving complex quantum issues of insurance company valuation
ENBD v Almakhawi – seeking to enforce multi-million pound Dubai judgment against assets in Jersey by obtaining disclosure and freezing orders and arguing for reversal of disposals into trust at trial.
