Tom Hall

As Partner and Head of Court of Protection at Hugh James, Tom Hall leads the firm’s national Court of Protection department. He is recognised for handling high-value property and financial affairs matters for vulnerable clients, including people with severe brain injuries who have received substantial compensation awards. Having worked exclusively in Court of Protection law since 2012, Tom brings deep technical knowledge together with a practical, relationship-focused approach for clients, families and the professionals supporting them.

Tom’s practice covers complex deputyship work for individuals who lack capacity. He advises on the management of damages awards, property purchases and arrangements, care provision, statutory wills and wider financial affairs. Tom is also regularly instructed as an expert witness in personal injury and clinical negligence cases, producing Part 35-compliant reports on Court of Protection and deputyship costs.

Under Tom’s leadership, the Hugh James Court of Protection team has developed into a sizeable national department, with specialist capability in Cardiff, Manchester and London. Chambers highlights the team’s work for clients who have received significant damages following personal injury or clinical negligence claims, including cases involving brain and spinal injuries. Its work includes overseeing financial affairs, care packages and property purchases for people with complex needs.

He has presented to personal injury lawyers, charities and professional groups at events including the Court of Protection Practitioners Association Annual Conference, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Annual Conference, the Professional Deputies Forum Annual Conference and the CMS UK Annual Conference.

Tom has contributed to STEP Journal, Personal Injury Law Journal and New Law Journal. He also authored the Court of Protection chapter in the fourth edition of the APIL Clinical Negligence Handbook. Under his leadership, the team was named Court of Protection Team of the Year at the British Wills and Probate Awards in both 2024 and 2025.
