Thomas practices in all areas of law relating to children, public and private. He represents local authorities, parents, children, intervenors and other interested parties such as grandparents.
Thomas has practiced in family law since 2010. Before coming to the bar in 2016, Thomas worked at several well-known law firms in the West Midlands working predominantly in family law as well as gaining experience in civil and employment.
Once commencing his practice at the bar, Thomas practiced in children, family finance, judicial review and immigration. As his practice progressed, he chose to specialise the law relating to children. Thomas regularly appears in the Family Court and High Court on multi-day hearings. He has also appeared in the Court of Appeal (as sole counsel and being led) and in the Supreme Court.
In private law, he has represented parents, both of the same and different sex, in cases with elements of domestic abuse (including control and coercion, physical, emotional, psychological and sexual abuse, including rape and sexual abuse of both the other parent and the children involved), parental alienation, and cases where there is an international element to them.
Thomas has for many years been instructed in complex public law cases involving vulnerable adults, those with cognitive limitations and cases involving the official solicitor, challenges to the decision-making process of the local authority, and serious allegations including: chronic neglect, non-accidental injuries, county lines drug dealing, serious physical and sexual abuse of children, factitious and induced illness and baby deaths.
