With over 14 years of experience, Sreemoyee Deb stands out as one of India’s few competition lawyers with a unique blend of experience in both private practice and working within the CCI. Notably, she was one of the youngest women competition lawyers to achieve partnership at a leading competition law firm in the country.
1. Diverse Sector Expertise: She has advised clients across diverse sectors, including e-commerce, travel, mobile-communication technology, manufacturing, steel, etc. on the full scope of competition law, including cartel defence, abuse of dominance, merger control, interpretation of statutes and compliance trainings. She has also assisted clients in proceedings before the hearing conducted by the Parliamentary Committees in India and Congressional Committee in the US. She has also notified several contentious M&A transactions to the CCI and has conducted comprehensive competition law compliance training programs for various corporates.
2. Contribution in shaping competition law jurisprudence in India: She has prolifically contributed in shaping the competition law jurisprudence in India on matters which are of global significance, but are being analyzed and investigated in India for the very first time. She has also been a part of notable administrative and constitutional law challenges (before the constitutional courts) arising from the CCI’s investigations and adjudications.
3. Policy Contributions: She has also contributed to the evolution of competition policy in India, including assisting the Competition Law Review Committee in preparing their recommendations on the proposed amendments to the Competition Act, 2002 and the Committee on Digital Competition Law, which examined the need for an ex-ante regulatory mechanism in India.
4. Recognition and awards: She has consistently been awarded with individual and firm honours, including being presented with the “Young Achiever of the Year” award by Legal Era in 2021; being recognized by Forbes India’s Legal Powerlist 2021 as one of the top individual lawyers in India; being recognized by Legal Era’s Women in Law Excellence Awards 2022 for her outstanding contribution to the legal profession; along with numerous awards with the Competition/Antitrust team such as the recognition by the Legal 500 in the 2023 Asia-Pacific Rankings, the recognition by Benchmark Litigation in the 2022 and 2023 rankings, being recognised as “Highly Recommended Law Firm” by Asialaw in 2022 and 2023, being ranked among the top 50 law firms in India with a special recognition for the Competition/Antitrust practice by Forbes in 2020, in addition to being recognised as “Competition & Anti-Trust Law Firm of the Year” for three consecutive years between 2019 and 2023 by Legal Era, being recognised as the “Competition Law Firm of the Year” by BW Legal World, 2022, and as one of India’s premier law firms in “Competition & Antitrust” in 2023 by Indian Business Law Journal.
