Career
A prominent figure in Cuban law and the Cuban intelligentsia, he is a consultant lawyer at Dávalos Abogados. He is also an associate of the Civil and Commercial Court of Arbitration (CIMA), president of the Cuban Court of International Commercial Arbitration, and member of the National Council of the National Union of Jurists of Cuba (UNJC).
Since 1992, he has served as arbitrator of the Foreign Trade Arbitration Court attached to the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Cuba, and since 2007, he has presided over the Cuban Court of International Commercial Arbitration. His vast experience includes presiding over arbitral tribunals and acting as a collegiate arbitrator in approximately 130 international commercial arbitration proceedings under the auspices of the Cuban Court. In addition, he was alternate arbitrator (2011-2014) and arbitrator (2015-2021) of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, participating in multiple arbitration proceedings both in this court and in other international forums, including ad hoc arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules. He has acted as counsel or litigation counsel in several international arbitrations and has mediated and conciliated in numerous ICC arbitration proceedings.
He has advised on joint venture negotiations, international contracting, arbitration, and litigation in 30 countries, including Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the People's Republic of China, the United Kingdom and the United States. His notable experience includes participation in the legal team of the "Gonzalez v. Reno" case in Miami Dade Federal Court in 2000, related to the kidnapping of the Cuban rafter child Elian Gonzalez. In addition, he has been a member of teams of lawyers or advised in legal proceedings in courts in Spain, the United States, Italy, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
