Michael is a financial remedy specialist barrister with over 30 years’ experience in both big money cases and cases with limited assets. He is particularly adept at finding creative solutions be it in Divorce, Dissolution, Separation, Schedule 1, Intervener and Inheritance Act Claims. He has a reputation for being calm under pressure with a good humoured and robust forensic approach backed up with careful analysis.
Client feedback has described Michael as being approachable, “charming” and “brilliant” whilst those on the receiving end of his advocacy have described him, amongst other things, as being a “total B……!”.
Michael regularly acts for overseas or internationally based clients where habitual residence, jurisdiction and forum are in issue. He is familiar with the practical and technical challenges these present whether advising on commercial and farming assets, mitigating or deferring tax implications in both a domestic and international context to make pragmatic and efficient settlements. His work frequently involves advising and negotiating around the complexities of undisclosed assets, financial manipulation, offshore funds, international assets, trust and corporate assets. A significant element of his day-to-day practice involves dealing with corporate and trust structures that need analysis and unravelling.
Michael has a detailed understanding and grasp of the issues posed by the more esoteric aspects of pensions be they underfunded schemes, unapproved schemes, partially crystalised funds or the complexities of AFPS funds.
