Practice Areas
Michael specialises in commercial chancery litigation and related professional negligence. Having practised for several years at the Chancery Bar before joining 4 New Square, Michael is widely known and stands out for his expertise across these practice areas. He was recently recognised as Professional Negligence Junior of the Year having been nominated for two years running by both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500. The majority of the professional negligence claims in which Michael is instructed engage issues of company law, insolvency, property, trusts and succession. Such claims frequently arise out of substantial property, secured lending or share transactions, or relate to trust and succession structures often with tax mitigation issues at their heart. At the other end of the spectrum, Michael’s work often relates to insolvency procedures and receivership. Many of the disputes Michael deals with involve the duties of fiduciaries. Michael also regularly advises and acts in relation to claims for rectification to mitigate the impact of professional negligence. The range of professions which Michael is experienced in dealing with is broad. Many claims involve lawyers, both solicitors and barristers, but Michael also acts in relation to claims against insolvency practitioners, directors, trust professionals, accountants, tax advisors, receivers and valuers, as well as property agents and town planners. Michael has a particular interest in disputes relating to art and cultural property and the liability of art professionals such as auctioneers and art intermediaries, and advises, writes and lectures on the subject. Michael is also an accredited mediator.
