Career
Matthew Karmel leads the Environmental and Sustainability Law practice at Offit Kurman, advising a diverse client base—from Fortune 100 companies to individual property owners—on complex environmental legal issues. With a practice that spans brownfield redevelopment, regulatory compliance, waste and recycling law, environmental litigation, permitting, and renewable energy, Matthew delivers practical, solutions-oriented counsel tailored to each client’s needs. He routinely appears before federal and state agencies, including the EPA, NJDEP, and NYSDEC, and has deep experience with key environmental statutes such as CERCLA, RCRA, ISRA, the New Jersey Spill Act, and New York’s Brownfield Cleanup Program.
Widely recognized for his leadership in environmental law and sustainability, Matthew is a frequent speaker and writer for prominent platforms including Waste Dive, NJBiz, and BioCycle, and has presented at institutions like Rutgers and Fordham Law. He serves on the boards of the Mid-Atlantic Solar & Storage Industries Association and the NJ Composting Council, and is known for his pro bono work on environmental justice initiatives.
