Career

For the past 28 years, Mary Inman has focused her practice exclusively on the representation of whistleblowers worldwide seeking to report fraud and other forms of corporate wrongdoing under the ever increasing array of U.S., Canadian, U.K. and South Korean whistleblower reward programs. Starting with her three years working in London between 2017 and 2020, Mary has continued to develop expertise in representing international whistleblowers, including those seeking to file under the U.S. reward programs as well as those seeking to file in Canada, the U.K. and South Korea. Mary has been a frequent advisor to legislators, regulators and researchers in the U.S., U.K., E.U. and Australia on the history and operation of the U.S. whistleblower reward programs.

Together with her colleagues, Mary has pioneered a series of successful whistleblower cases against prominent health insurers, hospitals, provider groups and vendors alleging manipulation of the risk scores of Medicare Advantage patients. Among those cases include her representation of (1) the late Dr. Darren Sewell, M.D. in a successful $32.7 million settlement with Florida Medicare Advantage Organization Freedom Health and its COO, (2) Teresa Ross in an up to $100 million settlement with Independent Health and the former COO of now defunct coding vendor DxID, and (3) Dr. James Taylor, M.D. in a $581 million settlement with Kaiser Permanente.

In addition to healthcare fraud, Mary has helped two separate whistleblowers achieve successful False Claims Act settlements with fashion retailers The Pure Collection and Alexis LLC for alleged violations of U.S. customs laws. She has also represented successful whistleblowers who have helped the States of California and Nevada and their municipalities prosecute procurement fraud and receive settlements for the alleged provision of knowingly defective waterworks parts.

In the Tech space, Mary also has had the honor of representing renowned whistleblowers Tyler Shultz (Theranos), Frances Haugen (Facebook/Meta) and Mark MacGann (Uber).

Mary is a founding Board member of Psst.org, a nonprofit seeking to support and connect whistleblowers working in BigTech and frontier AI labs and collectivize the act of speaking out. She is also a passionate advocate for the promotion of the psycho-social health and wellbeing of whistleblowers.

Prior to becoming a whistleblower lawyer, Mary worked as an associate at O’Melveny & Myers LLP in San Francisco and clerked for the Honorable D. Brock Hornby of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine and the Honorable Norman H. Stahl of the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
