Markus is a partner at bpv Huegel in Vienna and co-head of the firm’s dispute resolution practice.
He is a specialist in international arbitration and contentious proceedings before national courts. Markus regularly represents clients before ICC, VIAC, UNCITRAL, DIS and ad-hoc arbitral tribunals as well as before Austrian Courts, including the Austrian Supreme Court and the Austrian Constitutional Court. He also sits as arbitrator – including as chairperson – among others under the ICC, VIAC and DIS Rules
He focuses on disputes in the areas of technology, plant engineering, construction, energy, the chemical industry, joint ventures, corporations and private foundations, post-M&A and European competition law.
Markus received his doctorate from the University of Vienna (2006), an LL.M from University College London (2004) and a master’s degree from the University of Graz (2002). He also studied at Sciences-Po Paris (2000/2001) and was a university assistant / lecturer at Rutgers University Law School (2003) and at the University of Innsbruck.
Markus has published many articles, particularly in the field of international arbitration. Since 2007, he has commented on the decisions of the Austrian Supreme Court on the annulment and enforcement of arbitral awards and challenges to arbitrators.
