J. Leland Murphree represents a broad range of stakeholders in commercial insolvency matters both in and out of court. Mr. Murphree has a national practice advancing the interests of secured and unsecured creditors, debtors, fiduciaries, investors and creditors’ committees in bankruptcy disputes and distressed situations and transactions. Mr. Murphree seeks creative solutions to complex problems and has experience with matters across a variety of industries, including real estate, healthcare and senior living, manufacturing, higher education, automotive, agribusiness, hospitality, technology, energy and nonprofits.
Throughout his career, Mr. Murphree has advised businesses of all types and sizes on matters ranging from the ordinary course to the existential. On any given day, he could be working with in-house counsel on drafting contracts and managing distressed transactions, advising leadership on fiduciary duties, and helping CFO’s navigate distressed credits and find ways to make the next payroll. Mr. Murphree finds practical solutions through a multidisciplinary approach because business insolvency requires an understanding of all aspects of a client’s business.
Mr. Murphree has been recognized for several years as a leading practitioner by Chambers USA (Bankruptcy/Restructuring), Best Lawyers in America© (Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law) and Mid-South Super Lawyers (Bankruptcy: Business). In 2018, Mr. Murphree was included in the American Bankruptcy Institute’s 2018 Class of “Top 40 Under 40” Emerging Leaders in Insolvency.
Mr. Murphree is very involved in the American Bankruptcy Institute and writes and speaks on a variety of insolvency topics. He is the past president of the Alabama State Bar Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section and the Turnaround Management Association’s Alabama Chapter and also served on the Alabama Law Institute’s advisory committees for the Alabama Uniform Voidable Transactions Act (2018) and the Alabama Uniform Commercial Real Estate Receivership Act (2024).
