Julie Hatton trained with locally renowned Clinical Negligence firm Preston Goldburn and re-joined Coodes as a Partner in July 2018 after a short period of working as a clinical negligence specialist with another South West firm.

Julie is ranked in the 2026 edition of Chambers and Partners.

Julie was part of the team which won the Clinical Negligence Team of the Year at the 2024 PI Awards, and was herself shortlisted for Outstanding Case of the Year

Work Highlights

Immediate damages order

Representing a 22 year old who received £1.1million immediate damages award, and an Order for Provisional Damages for the injuries he sustained including neonatal renal failure requiring dialysis followed by renal transplant, brain injury resulting in cognitive impairment, premature cataract and diabetes following the negligent management of his and his mother’s labour and delivery.

Surgical Error

Considerable damages for client who suffered injury to the vagus nerve during anti-reflux surgery.

Considerable damages for client who was left with a permanent stoma following a delay in ileostomy closure.

Considerable damages for client who developed Fournier’s gangrene when a haematoma was not treated appropriately.

Considerable damages obtained for a 17-year-old whose GP failed to detect developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Considerable damages obtained for a female client whose bladder was perforated during a hysterectomy leading to a Vesico-Vaginal Fistula.

Considerable damages obtained for client who had to have a temporary colostomy after the hospital negligently left a rectal pack inside him.

Julie has more than 30 years’ clinical negligence experience, since 2003 she has been an accredited specialist with the Law Society Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme and has been a member of APIL since 1997, becoming a Senior Litigator and Clinical Negligence accredited specialist.

Julie acts for clients in high value, complex, maximum severity cases such as those arising from brain or spinal injuries, fatal claims, delayed diagnosis, surgical errors, bowel injuries and obstetric injury cases including cerebral palsy, stillbirths, neonatal deaths and birth injury claims.
