Jonathon has almost 30 years’ experience in legal practice.

He maintains a broad national practice encompassing advice and appearance work in: (i) high value commercial disputes and class actions, (ii) international arbitration and private international law, and (iii) public law, regulatory matters (including competition and consumer law) and commissions of inquiry. He has an emerging appellate practice and has appeared as Silk in recent years in major appeals in the High Court of Australia, the Full Federal Court and the New South Wales, Queensland, Victorian and Western Australian Courts of Appeal.

He is regularly retained by leading law firms and corporate clients for international arbitrations, including arbitrations seated in Singapore, London, Dubai, Hong Kong and New York. He was Vice President of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA), the peak arbitral body in Australia from 2018-2025. His arbitration expertise is also recognised in the leading international directory Who’s Who Legal, in which he is described as a “energetic practitioner who pays close attention to detail” with “an incredibly strong practice.” He is also a member of Twenty Essex in Singapore and London.

Some of his previous and ongoing clients include Aurelius, BHP Billiton, Caterpillar, Cannaccord Genuity, Chevron, CSR, James Hardie, AGL, ATCO, Allianz, McGrath Nicol, Korda Mentha, Chubb, Marsh, Vestas, Samsung, Stone Axe, Kimberley Clarke, IOOF, NAB, KPMG and Yara International. He also does a substantial amount of pro bono work for the Human Rights Law Centre.

Representative Matters

Acted as lead counsel for the special purpose receiver in the $1 billion Banksia collapse for over 12 years involving dozens of parties and complex claims, reported judgments and landmark appeals in Victoria and NSW across all aspects of insolvency law, trusts and trustee duties, class actions, professional responsibility and fraud, directors duties, professional negligence (auditors, brokers, lawyers), M&A and banking and finance.

Acting as Senior Counsel to the administrators of Greensill (UK) in connection with the collapse of Greensill and complex claims brought in the Federal Court of Australia and the United Kingdom

Acting for shareholders in major appeal against Worley relating to loss and damage in shareholder class actions

Acting for Canaccord Genuity in 6 week trial and major appeal concerning claims of breach of fiduciary duty and knowing assistance of more than $100 million arising from the collapse of Ashington Property Group

Acting for Stone Axe (largest Wagyu producer in Australia) in successful claims in an international arbitration in connection with a major business acquisition

Acting for ATCO (Canada) in parallel international arbitrations in Australia and Canada involving highly complicated information technology contracts

Acting for IOOF in major regulatory proceedings brought by APRA arising out of Banking Royal Commission

Acting for Yara International in the Oswal Proceedings in Supreme Court of Victoria (largest proceedings ever brought in Victoria)

Acting for Samsung in $1 billion ICC arbitration arising from the Roy Hill project in Western Australia, seated and heard in Singapore/London

Acting for BHP in large ICC iron ore price arbitrations seated in Singapore

Acting for ACICA, Australia’s peak arbitral body, in 5 separate High Court interventions across all aspects of arbitral law from 2012 to 2024

Acting for Angas Securities in complex proceedings in the Federal Court concerning several attempts over many years by trustee to appoint external administrators

Acting for Kimberley-Clark in successful defence and appeal in major regulatory proceedings brought by ACCC in Federal Court concerning flushable wipes

Acting for AGL in high-profile regulatory proceedings brought by ACCC in Federal Court relating to electricity pricing

Acting for NAB in Banking Royal Commission, Local Government in Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and the Commonwealth in the Disability Royal Commission
