Career

Jean Paul is the founding partner of Dechamps International Law. He is an acknowledged leader in investor-state and commercial arbitration who has represented commercial and sovereign clients in some of the most high-profile investor-state disputes submitted to arbitration, with over 15 years of experience in the field, across an array of sectors such as energy, hydrocarbon, mining, telecommunications, transportation, infrastructure, and food production and distribution. He has appeared as counsel for private clients and state entities in more than 40 international arbitrations conducted under the arbitration rules of the ICC, ICSID, ICSID(AF), UNCITRAL and the LCIA. He has also acted as arbitrator under the ICC Rules.

He has been recognized by Chambers (Latin America), and Who’s Who Legal as a leader in international arbitration.

Jean Paul started his career in 2002 in the disputes group of a full-service firm in Buenos Aires. In 2005 and 2006 he worked in the litigation department of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, in London. Between 2007 and 2017, he worked in the international arbitration group of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, spending time in the Paris, Washington D.C. and London offices.

Educated in both the civil and common law systems, Jean Paul obtained his law degree from the Universidad Católica Argentina, where he also completed postgraduate studies in Business Economic Law. Jean Paul has obtained LL.M. degrees in Commercial and International Arbitration and in Business Law from the University of Westminster and Georgetown University, respectively.

In addition, Jean Paul teaches international arbitration at the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom and the Austral University in Argentina. He also collaborates in courses and publications at the ESADE University of Barcelona, Spain and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Jean Paul is member of the Buenos Aires and New York bars and has been admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales. He speaks Spanish, English and Portuguese.
