Practice Areas
James is an experienced and trusted legal adviser to families, acting across the generations, and familiar with the issues which tend to arise. He is often appointed executor, or asked to act as trustee for family trusts, and is attorney for a number of clients for whom he has acted over the years and have now lost capacity. He regularly acts in conjunction with accountants, wealth managers and other family advisers to provide joined-up support.
With over 20 years’ experience including 10 years as a partner at Blake Morgan, he has built up an enviable reputation doing tax and succession planning for those with complex family structures, inheritance tax concerns, literary estates, business interests and foreign aspects. He regularly writes blogs for the firm’s publication “Private Client Issues” and is always willing to invest in the training of younger solicitors. He has lectured to the Chartered Institute of Tax (Thames Valley) on several occasions, to the Solicitors Regulation Authority, to various Clubs in Oxford and London and has appeared on national breakfast TV and been interviewed for local radio.
His ‘old money’ and ‘new money’ clients include other members of the legal profession, Family Investment Companies, business owners, high profile individuals and those with disabilities or seeking to make provision for family members with special needs. He has experience of successful offers in lieu of inheritance tax, use of s.11 IHTA to minimise tax for minor beneficiaries with terminally ill parents and creating, restructuring and simplifying family trusts.
Outside interests: historical tour-guiding, choral singing, church deacon
