Iain Sandford helps government and corporate clients address the challenges of trading goods and services across national boundaries. Iain applies a unique blend of experience in using the important and enforceable international law levers available through the WTO and other public international law regimes.
Iain has litigated numerous cases before WTO panels and the Appellate Body, both as a government lawyer and in private practice. Iain draws on experience gained in commercial dispute resolution, particularly from his experience in mediation and other alternative forms of settlement for commercial disputes. His experience spans virtually all phases of the WTO dispute settlement process.
In addition to experience as counsel, Iain has also been an adjudicator, serving as a WTO dispute settlement panelist in United States – Anti-Dumping Measures on Certain Shrimp from Vietnam.
In addition to dispute resolution work, Iain assists stakeholders with the pursuit of their objectives in international negotiations, drawing on his familiarity with existing agreements, enforcement procedures and negotiating frameworks. Iain has assisted both commercial and government stakeholders with activity relating to free-trade negotiations and investment treaty issues, particularly in relation to strategy, negotiation and legal drafting, as well as understanding the implications of proposed and existing rules.
