Career

In full-time practice since 2002 specialising in all aspects of maritime law, international trade and insurance, Huang Hui has handled numerous complex, influential and typical cases, including a number of landmark cases in the history of maritime judicial practice and foreign-related legal services in China.

Work Highlights

1. Lead counsel in PICC Zhongshan v CPIC Dongguan (dispute over double insurance) before China' Supreme Court). The case was featured in both GAZETTE OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE'S COURT [2023] Issue 9 and Informa UK's Chinese Maritime and Commercial Law Report [2023] Vol 4. Besides, the case was awarded “Deals of the Year 2023” by China Business Law Journal and “Exemplary Case” by LegalOne in March 2024. Honoured with an “Annual Achievement Award 2023” by Guangzhou Lawyers Association for his successful representation in this case.

2. Lead counsel in Guangzhou Shipping Materials Supply Co. Ltd. v TAN BINH CO., LTD (collision) which was selected for “Typical Cases on the Application of International Treaties and International Practices in Foreign-related Civil and Commercial Cases” by China’s Supreme Court and "Top 10 Typical Maritime Cases of the Year 2023" by Guangzhou Maritime Court. Honoured with an “Annual Achievement Award 2023” by Guangzhou Lawyers Association for his successful representation in this case. Besides, the case was awarded “Exemplary Case” by LegalOne.

3. Represented insurers of Chinese bulk carrier “Z” in a range of claims arising from her collision with Marshall Islands-registered container ship “M” which resulted in the death of 11 crew members (Matter value: over RMB 200 million). Won an "Annual Achievement Award of the Year 2017" presented by Guangzhou Lawyers Association and an "Exemplary Case in Foreign-related Legal Services" award by Guangdong Lawyers Association for his successful representation in this case which was selected for "Top 10 Typical Marine Traffic Accidents 2010-2020" by China’s Ministry of Transportation, and featured in "Outstanding Foreign-related Cases" published by All China Lawyers Association and "Compendium of Exemplary Cases in Foreign-related Legal Services 2014-2018" published by All China Lawyers Association.

4. Successfully represented cargo interests in a RMB730 million claim arising from fire on ocean-going container carrier Maersk Honam and won "Annual Achievement Award of the Year 2022" presented by Guangzhou Lawyers Association for his representation in this case, which was named among the High People’s Court of Guangdong Province’s first selection of “Ten Typical Maritime Cases” in May 2024, selected for "Top 10 Typical Cases of the Year 2022" by Guangzhou Maritime Court and "Nationwide Outstanding Court Cases for the Year 2023" by China’s Supreme Court, and awarded "Exemplary Deal" by LegalOne and Deals of the Year 2023 by China Business Law Journal.

5. Advised governmental authorities on death claims arising from the capsizing of the Chinese ocean-going fishing vessel “Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028” in the central Indian Ocean in May 2023, which resulted in the missing of 39 crew members of multiple nationalities. China’s top leadership called for an all-out effort to rescue the crew. The incident and the subsequent search-and-rescue operations were extensively covered by both international and domestic media, generating widespread public concern. Huang Hui’s strategic and constructive advice led to swift and discreet settlements with the families of the deceased crew members. His adept handling of the case demonstrated exceptional professional competence and experience, leading to his appointment as the chief legal advisor by the Yantai Penglai District Law Society.
