Career

In full-time practice since 2002 specialising in all aspects of maritime law, international trade and insurance, Huang Hui has handled numerous complex, influential and typical cases, including a number of landmark cases in the history of maritime judicial practice and foreign-related legal services in China.

He was lead counsel in matters selected for Top 10 Landmark Cases of the Year and Top 10 Typical Maritime Cases of the Year by the Supreme People’s Court, GAZETTE OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE’S COURT, Guiding Cases of the Supreme People’s Court, Lloyd’s Law Reports, Chinese Maritime and Commercial Law Reports, Top 10 Typical Marine Traffic Accidents 2010-2020 released by the Ministry of Transportation, Typical Cross-border Disputes in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, Ten Typical Cases of Mutual Enforcement of Arbitral Awards between Mainland China and the HKSAR, and Outstanding Cases of Legal Services in the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay Area 2019 -2022, and Typical Cases on the Application of International Treaties and International Practices in Foreign-related Civil and Commercial Cases by the Supreme People’s Court.

He is highly experienced in foreign-related matters and has been invited to give testimony as expert in Chinese law in courts or arbitration tribunals in New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Panama and other regions and achieved very satisfactory results for the clients.

Work Highlights

1. Successfully acted for PICC ZS in PICC ZS v. CPIC DG (a double insurance dispute) before the Supreme People’s Court of China. . The case was featured in both GAZETTE OF THE SUPREME PEOPLE'S COURT [2023] No. 9 and Informa UK's Chinese Maritime and Commercial Law Reports [2023] Vol. 4. Besides, the case was awarded “Deals of the Year 2023” by China Business Law Journal and recognised as an “Exemplary Case” by LegalOne. Mr. Huang also received the Guangzhou Lawyers Association’s “2023 Annual Achievement Award (Second Prize)” for his successful representation in this matter.

2. Successfully represented TB Co. in GZ Shipping Materials v. TB Co. (a vessel collision liability dispute). This matter was selected by China’s Supreme Court as a "Typical Case on the Application of International Treaties and International Practices in Foreign-related Civil and Commercial Cases" (December 2023) and listed among Guangzhou Maritime Court’s "Top 10 Typical Maritime Cases of the Year 2023" (March 2024). Besides, the case was recognised as an “Exemplary Case” by Legal One and Mr. Huang received the Guangzhou Lawyers Association’s “2023 Annual Achievement Award (First Prize)”for his successful representation in this matter.

3. Successfully acted for a major Chinese insurer in a range of claims arising from the collision between Chinese bulk carrier “Z” and Marshall Islands-flagged container vessel “M” resulting in 11 crew fatalities (claim value exceeding RMB 200 million). Mr. Huang’s representation earned the Guangzhou Lawyers Association’s “2017 Annual Achievement Award”. The matter was also featured in the All China Lawyers Association’s Outstanding Foreign-related Legal Service Cases (2020) and its Compendium of Typical Foreign-related Legal Service Cases (2014–2018), as well as awarded Third Prize in the Guangdong Lawyers Association’s “Typical Cases of Foreign-related Legal Services”.

4. Successfully represented one of the defendants in A.P. Møller Singapore Pte Ltd v. ZSH Industry Co., Ltd. et al. ( a RMB730 million claim arising from fire on an ocean-going container carrier). The matter was named among China’s Supreme Court’s selection of "Nationwide Outstanding Court Cases for the Year 2023", the High People’s Court of Guangdong Province’s inaugural “Top 10 Typical Maritime Cases” (published May 2024) and Guangzhou Maritime Court’s "Top 10 Typical Cases of the Year 2022", and was recognised as an “Exemplary Case” by Legal One. The matter also earned the Guangzhou Lawyers Association’s “2022 Annual Achievement Award” and was awarded “Deals of the Year 2023” by China Business Law Journal.

5. Successfully represented a major Chinese P&C insurer in The “Fu Jing 001” — a case concerning the determination of liability limitation for maritime claims involving an offshore wind turbine installation platform. The matter was selected by the Guangdong Higher People’s Court as one of the “Top 10 Typical Maritime Trial Cases of 2025”.
