Ernesto Tzirulnik

Ernesto Tzirulnik has been practicing Insurance Law since 1981. He graduated in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and holds a PhD in Financial and Economic Law from the University of São Paulo (USP). After heading the legal department of a major Brazilian large risks insurer, he founded Ernesto Tzirulnik Advocacia – ETAD in 1984, to this day internationally recognized as one of the leading law firms specializing in insurance and reinsurance. In 2000, Mr. Tzirulnik founded the Brazilian Institute of Insurance Law – IBDS, a non-governmental organization which he presides. He also chaired the legal commission responsible for drafting the first bill on insurance contracts in Brazilian history, which was enacted in 2024 (Law No. 15.040/2024). Since 2009, after decades primarily representing insurers and reinsurers, his legal practice shifted to representing policyholders, and insurers or reinsurers only when in conflict with each other. Mr. Tzirulnik has written numerous legal essays, including the first Brazilian book on loss adjustment (“Regulação de sinistro (ensaio jurídico)”) and commentaries on the Brazilian Civil Code’s chapter on insurance contracts. Since 2022, he has served as Chair of the Special Committee on Insurance and Reinsurance of the São Paulo Chapter of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/SP). He has published numerous articles and essays in specialized journals and frequently lectures on Insurance and Reinsurance Law.
