Elsa Ortega is a lawyer and arbitrator with over 25 years of experience in international commercial arbitration. Throughout her career, she has been involved in large-scale, highly complex disputes administered under the rules of leading arbitral institutions, including the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Mexico City Arbitration Center (CAM), and the National Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City (CANACO).
Her practice also encompasses the representation of clients in investor-State arbitrations, as well as serving as arbitrator in cases before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), giving her a comprehensive understanding of arbitration disputes in both the commercial and investment protection spheres.
Ms. Ortega is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and has been a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration since 2024.
In the field of arbitration, she has acted as party counsel, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator, and president of arbitral tribunals in a wide variety of proceedings arising from commercial transactions between private parties and public sector entities. Her arbitration experience spans multiple sectors and industries, including automotive, oil and gas, electricity, construction, transportation, finance, hospitality, food, mining, and insurance.
In the academic sphere, she has served as professor of Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods in the Master's in Private Law program at the Faculty of Law of Universidad Anáhuac México, and she currently holds the chair in Arbitration in the Master's in Procedural Law program at the Escuela Libre de Derecho.
Ms. Ortega was born in Mexico City. She graduated with honors from the Escuela Libre de Derecho in 1996 and obtained an LL.M. in European Legal Studies from the College of Europe in Brugge, Belgium in 1998, and a Diploma on International Trade Negotiations from El Colegio de México in 2021.
